What this policy covers

This policy applies to Salsabeel Charity's website, donations and tax-receipt administration, requests for assistance, volunteer and partnership communications, newsletters, events, and the Salsabeel Zakat Calculator and Salsabeel Qibla Compass apps.

Third-party websites and services that you choose to use — such as payment processors, crowdfunding platforms or market-data providers — have their own privacy practices.

Information we may collect

The information we collect depends on how you interact with Salsabeel.

• Donors: name, email address, mailing address when needed for a tax receipt, donation amount and date, and information you include with a donation or message.
• People requesting assistance and beneficiaries: contact information and information reasonably needed to understand, verify and respond to a request. Depending on the program, this may include family or financial circumstances, education information, medical information, supporting documents, photographs or a personal story.
• Volunteers, partners and people who contact us: name, contact details, messages, relevant experience and information connected with the relationship or request.
• Newsletter subscribers: email address and information needed to manage subscription preferences.
• Website visitors: technical and usage information such as browser or device information, pages visited, approximate location derived from an IP address, referral information and other analytics data.

We try to collect only the information reasonably needed for the purpose at hand.

How we use information

• to deliver and administer charitable programs;
• to assess and verify requests for assistance;
• to process donations, issue charitable tax receipts and maintain financial records;
• to communicate with donors, beneficiaries, applicants, volunteers and partners;
• to send newsletters or updates to people who have subscribed;
• to operate, secure and improve our website and services;
• to prevent misuse, protect people and the charity, and comply with legal or regulatory obligations.

Assistance applications and sensitive information

Requests for education, medical or other assistance can involve sensitive personal information. We use that information to assess the request, verify the circumstances and, when assistance is approved, arrange the support.

Information may be reviewed by Salsabeel directors or trusted volunteers involved in the case. Where appropriate, information may also be shared with an institution, landlord, medical provider or another person involved in verifying or delivering the assistance.

If a beneficiary agrees to photographs, a story or other information being used publicly for fundraising or communications, we may publish the agreed material. We do not treat agreement to receive assistance as permission to publish information beyond what has been agreed.

Donations and payment providers

Salsabeel may receive donations through services such as PayPal, PayPal Giving Fund, GoFundMe, e-Transfer or other payment channels. Those providers process payment or banking information under their own privacy policies. Salsabeel generally receives the information needed to identify and record the donation and, where applicable, issue a charitable tax receipt.

We do not ask you to send credit-card numbers through our website forms or by email.

Website analytics and cookies

We use website analytics tools, including Google analytics services, to understand how people find and use our website. These tools may use cookies or similar technologies and may receive technical information such as your IP address, device or browser information and pages visited.

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how parts of the website work.

Newsletter and communications

Our email newsletter is managed using MailPoet. If you subscribe, we use your email address to send Salsabeel updates and manage your subscription. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in an email or by contacting us.

We may also reply directly when you contact us about donations, assistance, volunteering, partnerships or another question.

When we share information

We may share personal information only where reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including with trusted volunteers, service providers, professional advisers, institutions or other organizations helping us deliver a program or comply with the law.

We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, a court order or a lawful request from an authority. We do not sell or rent personal information.

Information outside Canada

Salsabeel is a Canadian charity with programming in Egypt. Some volunteers, recipients and service providers are outside Canada, and some technology providers may process information in other countries. Information processed outside Canada may be subject to the laws of the country where it is processed.

Retention and security

We retain personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected and for legal, accounting, charitable-receipting or record-keeping requirements. Different records may therefore be kept for different periods.

We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect information. No method of transmitting or storing information is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children and young people

Some Salsabeel programs may support children or young people. When personal information about a minor is needed for assistance, we seek appropriate involvement or authorization from a parent, guardian or other responsible adult where required. We do not intentionally collect unnecessary personal information from children through the website or Zakat Calculator.

Zakat Calculator

The amounts you enter in the Salsabeel Zakat Calculator — including cash, gold, silver, investments, business assets, money owed to you, other assets, debts or a custom nisab — are processed locally on your device. Salsabeel Charity does not receive those calculator entries and the app does not create a user account.

To calculate a current silver-based nisab, the app requests public market data from third-party services. At the time this policy was updated, these include Gold API for silver prices and ExchangeRate-API for currency conversion where needed. Your calculator values are not included in those requests. The provider may receive standard technical request information such as your IP address, requested currency and user-agent.

The app may keep a small local cache of recent silver, exchange-rate and nisab values so a recent threshold can be shown if a live update is unavailable. The app does not request GPS location.

Version 1.0 of the app does not include advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs, cross-app tracking or a user account system. If you choose to donate from the app, it opens an external donation service, which handles its own payment information.

Market-data providers handle their own technical information under their policies: Gold API Privacy Policy and ExchangeRate-API Terms and Privacy Policy.

Qibla Compass

The Salsabeel Qibla Compass app uses your approximate or precise location only when you choose to use the location feature and grant permission. Your coordinates are used on your device to calculate the Qibla direction and correct for magnetic north. You may instead enter coordinates manually without granting location permission.

The last coordinates are saved in the app's local storage so your selected location remains available when you reopen it. They are not transmitted to Salsabeel Charity or any third party. You can delete the saved coordinates by clearing the app's storage or uninstalling it.

The app uses your device's motion and magnetic sensors to display the compass. Sensor readings are processed on your device while the app is open and are not transmitted or stored.

The Qibla Compass does not request internet access and has no advertising, analytics or tracking SDKs, user accounts, in-app purchases or data collection servers. Location permission is optional; the app can calculate a Qibla bearing from manually entered coordinates. The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children or adults.

Your choices and requests

You may contact us to ask about personal information Salsabeel holds about you, request a correction, withdraw a communication preference or ask us to delete information where we are not required to retain it. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our programs, website, apps or service providers change. The effective date at the top of the page will be updated when material changes are made.
