Why Siwa?
Siwa: The oasis that felt like home
When Salsabeel co-founder Nehal first visited Siwa in 2017, she was immediately struck by an overwhelming sense of belonging. Although she knew little about the oasis before arriving, its uniqueness was immediately apparent.
She quickly discovered the people of Siwa to be remarkably kind, honest, helpful and genuine. Respect permeated everyday interactions, while the community’s close relationships created a powerful culture of loyalty and mutual support.
The profound impression left by Siwa and its people inspired Salsabeel to make the oasis one of the principal communities in which we work.
A culture of generosity
A community that looks after its own
Siwa’s geographic isolation has helped preserve a distinctive, close-knit society. Most people are connected as relatives, friends or friends of friends. This social fabric helps explain the strong loyalty and support that Nehal observed among the people of Siwa.
She still remembers seeing a beautiful wedding dress displayed in a shop that did not sell clothing. The shopkeeper explained that residents sometimes bring possessions to local businesses when they urgently need money. Shopkeepers may purchase those items—even when they know they are unlikely to resell them—simply to help a neighbour through a difficult period.
That quiet act of generosity reflected the compassion and community spirit that make Siwa so special.
