Siwa

Why Siwa?

When Nehal visited Siwa for the first time in 2017, she was immediately struck by an overwhelming sense of belonging. Although she knew very little about this beautiful oasis, its uniqueness was immediately apparent. She quickly discovered the people of Siwa to be remarkably kind, honest, helpful, and genuine. It is a deeply conservative community where respect permeates every interaction.

Siwa’s isolation has fostered a society that sometimes feels as though it belongs to an earlier century. Most people are interconnected, either as relatives, friends, or friends of friends. This close-knit social fabric likely explains the strong loyalty and support Nehal observed among the Siwans. She still recalls the shopkeeper displaying a beautiful wedding dress in his store, even though he didn’t sell clothing. When she inquired about it, he explained that it’s common for locals to bring in items to sell when they need money. The shopkeepers, understanding their predicament, will buy these items even if they know they won’t be able to resell them. It’s just one of the many ways they help each other.

Salabeel’s charity work is heavily focused in Siwa because of the profound impact the oasis and its people had on her during her initial visit. The kindness, honesty, and genuine nature of the Siwans, coupled with their strong sense of community and mutual support, left a lasting impression on Nehal. She recognized the unique qualities of this isolated society and felt compelled to contribute to its preservation and prosperity.  Additionally, the shopkeeper’s act of kindness towards a fellow community member in need further solidified Nehal’s dedication to supporting the people of Siwa.
